Cannabis law and quantum physics

There was a news report earlier this week that Federal prosecutors sent a subpoena back in September to Weedmaps, an online cannabis retail listing service, reportedly seeking information about various cannabis dispensaries (link).  The story highlighted for me the risks of doing business in an industry that is both illegal and highly regulated at the same time, which I characterize at times as the quantum physics nature of (US non-hemp) cannabis law (cf. link).  Regardless of efforts to engage in best practices and comply with state and local laws to the letter, the industry always has to be ready for the unanticipated consequences of this regulatory duality.
