Just released: EU’s General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Code of Practice

The EU’s General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Code of Practice, a voluntary framework designed to help providers of general-purpose AI models comply with the AI Act, was published by the EU-Commission at the end of July - just a tiny bit before the rules on GenAI under the EU AI Act kick in on August 2, 2025.

The Code is structured into three main chapters—Transparency, Copyright, and Safety and Security—each detailing specific obligations and best practices for AI model documentation, lawful data use, risk management, and regulatory cooperation. The Code includes practical tools such as a model documentation form and outlines processes for risk assessment, copyright compliance, and information sharing with authorities and downstream providers, aiming to foster trustworthy, safe, and legally compliant AI deployment in the EU.

The Code is addressed to GenAI developers, but downstream providers and also users of generative AI should ask for relevant information as appropriate.

The Code is definitely helpful, but comes a bit short term before the deadline. It remains to be expected that enforcement of the AI Act will start with a delay too.

The General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Code of Practice is a voluntary tool, prepared by independent experts in a multi-stakeholder process, designed to help industry comply with the AI Act’s obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models.
