EU AI Act published in Official Journal

The EU AI Act has finally been published in the EU Official Journal today and will go into effect in 20 days.  The Regulation applies in phases, and in January 2025 that AI systems that pose an unacceptable risks will be banned.  The AI office has been established and we expect to start seeing Codes of practice in March/April 2025; with the rules on general-purpose AI coming into force around August 2025 and the rules around high-risk AI obligations come into force around July 2027.

"We finally have the world’s first binding law on artificial intelligence, to reduce risks, create opportunities, combat discrimination, and bring transparency," said Brando Benifei (S&D, Italy), following a plenary session in March 2024.
