Navigating AI and the EU Regulatory Framework - Watch the Video

Welcome to a new series on AI, where we will explore the challenges and opportunities in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Over the coming months, we'll delve into various aspects of AI law and its implications for businesses and society.

In my video, I introduce some key topics  that we will be covering over the next few months. We'll examine new AI laws worldwide that regulate AI use and development, alongside existing laws now already applicable to AI. We'll also discuss the latest developments from authorities, case law, and courts, and what companies need to know when interacting with AI, particularly in areas like privacy law. For example, in Europe, there's ongoing guidance and decisions on the legality of scraping personal data from the internet for training AI models.

In Europe, some personal data might be permissible to scrape for AI training, but handling sensitive data like health information poses significant challenges. Companies need to understand which privacy laws apply to them, such as whether GDPR affects US companies using personal data in their AI training. Other privacy concerns include the handling of personal data in AI inputs and outputs, raising numerous legal questions. Additionally, employment law is evolving, with companies creating policies on employees' use of AI, focusing on permitted software and usage guidelines.

We'll also cover new AI-specific laws, like the European AI Act, which imposes extensive documentation and responsible use requirements on AI developers and users. This act categorizes AI technologies by risk levels and includes new rules on generative AI, adding responsibilities for developers and users. Our series will explore these and other global topics, with a focus across most industries and sectors. You can watch the video in its entirety at Reed Smith

Andreas Splittgerber explains why it is important for companies to know the legal implications when they develop, use or have other contact with AI.
