The clock is ticking for businesses in the EU (and those offering goods and services in the EU) as we're only one month away from the first European Accessibility Act (EAA) deadline. Quick reminders below on these EU-wide changes to consumer accessibility laws.
π£ What is the EAA? The EAA is an EU directive that mandates member states to enforce laws requiring certain consumer products and services to comply with minimum accessibility standards. The directive sets a baseline, but individual member states have the flexibility to impose stricter requirements if they choose.
π When do the rules kick in? From 28 June 2025, all in-scope services and any in-scope products released thereafter must comply with local requirements, and from 28 June 2030, all in-scope products and services must be compliant, regardless of when they were released.
π What do I need to do? It depends (of course!). Annex 1 of the EAA includes a list of accessibility obligations, but these vary based on the product or service you're offering. Penalties for non-compliance vary by member state and can include fines or (in extreme cases) criminal sentences.
