Olympics picks its esports titles

The International Olympics Committee has further details for the upcoming Olympic Esports Series, which will take place in Singapore in June 2023 (or the Olympic Esports Week). The line up features facsimiles of real-world competitive events rather than what many people may think of as more traditional esports games, such as real-time strategy titles, fighting games and first-person shooters.

The initial batch of nine games connect to disciplines overseen by international sports federations. They include Just Dance (for the Nintendo platform) and online chess from Chess.com. These have been picked from publishers working with the international federations and who represent the Olympics ideals.

The full initial list is:

  • Archery (World Archery Federation, Tic Tac Bow)
  • Baseball (World Baseball Softball Confederation, WBSC eBASEBALL™: POWER PROS)
  • Chess (International Chess Federation, Chess.com)
  • Cycling (UCI, Zwift)
  • Dance (World DanceSport Federation, Just Dance)
  • Motor sport (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, Gran Turismo)
  • Sailing (World Sailing, Virtual Regatta)
  • Taekwondo (World Taekwondo, Virtual Taekwondo)
  • Tennis (International Tennis Federation, Tennis Clash)

Just Dance and Gran Turismo are the more instantly recognizable ones. It turns out that most of us were conducting Olympic training during the lockdowns.

Qualifiers for the various title have started.

"The Olympic Movement brings people together in peaceful competition," said David Lappartient, chair of the IOC's Esports Liason Group. "The Olympic Esports Series 2023 is a continuation of that, with the ambition of creating more spaces to play for both players and fans of elite competition. We look forward to witnessing some of the world's best compete on the global stage, as well as exploring together shared opportunities and lessons - across health and well-being, training and innovation."
