The EU AI Act: An updated timeline

The timeline for the implementation of the EU AI Act has been updated following its official publication in the European Union Official Journal on July 12, 2024.

The Act, which was approved by the EU Parliament on March 13 and by the Council of the EU on May 21, establishes a regulatory framework that will primarily become applicable 24 months after publication. This allows companies across the EU time to prepare for compliance while providing a clear roadmap for how AI systems will be regulated moving forward. The staggered timeline for compliance introduces flexibility depending on the type of AI system. For example, General provision and Prohibited AI practices will be applicable February 2 2025 or large scale IT systems must comply by December 31 2030.
